FAQ

How do Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) work?

As we age, dead skin cells are replaced with new skin cells more slowly. This causes our skin to lose its fresh, healthy, youthful texture and glow and allows fine lines and wrinkles to develop. AHAs help accelerate the process by gently lifting away dead skin cells so new, healthy skin can emerge and encourage and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. This gentle process allows AHA products to be used daily to produce maximum and continuous benefits compared to harsh exfoliants like facial scrubs.

How do I choose an AHA product?

The three most important factors in choosing any AHA product is the type of AHA, the percentage of AHA and the pH level. Glycolic Acid, derived from sugar cane, has the smallest molecular structure of all AHAs and has been found to be the most effective for use in anti-aging products. Any AHA anti-aging product should contain at least 10% AHA with a pH level of 3.5 to 4.0 to be most effective. Over many decades of research, we have found that the best percentage of AHA and pH level to allow daily use to produce maximum and continuous benefits is between 10% and 14% AHA with a pH level of 3.7 to 4.0. We make AHA products with different percentages of AHA to accommodate all skin types and needs.

Can men use AHA products?

Yes, men are not immune to changes in their skin as they age and can get the same anti-aging benefits as women from AHA products.

What should I expect when I first use an AHA product?

An effective AHA product should leave your skin feeling and looking immediately refreshed. The appearance of lines and wrinkles will diminish over time. A little drying, peeling, stinging or redness in the beginning is normal as your skin gets accustomed to the AHAs. You also may see a few blemishes in the beginning as the impurities in your pores are released. Note: We recommend that you do a patch test if you have delicate or sensitive skin or are a first-time user of AHA products.

Can I use AHA products if I have delicate or sensitive skin?

Yes, but you should do a patch test first. In the beginning use the AHA product every other day until you are comfortable using it daily.

How often can I use AHA products?

After doing a patch test and building up to daily use, we recommend that you continue to use an AHA product at least once a day. You may also want to consider using it twice a day – once in the morning and once at night, but trial and error will tell you what works best for you.

Can I use AHA products with retinol products?

Yes, and, if you do, we recommend that you use the AHA product in the morning and the retinol product in the evening.

Is it important to use sunscreen with AHA products?

Yes, we recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher while using AHA products and for a week afterwards.

What will happen to my skin if I stop using AHA products?

Unfortunately, you will stop seeing the benefits from using them. The renewal of new skin cells is a continuous process that slows down as we age. The use of AHA products can only help accelerate this process while you are using them.

How do I reduce the signs of aging on my neck, chest and body?

You should use AHA products suited for these areas. The skin on your neck, chest and body goes through the same cell renewal process as on your face so these areas will derive the same benefits from using AHA products. Our 12% Glycolic AHA Renewal Body Lotion works wonders on your chest and body. Our other AHA facial products work well on your neck and hands. These areas have thinner skin similar to the face.

Is prescription retinol more effective than an over-the-counter version?

Typically, prescription retinol has a higher concentration of retinol and is used to treat more severe skin issues like difficult cases of acne and are overseen by a doctor. An over-the-counter version of retinol, especially one with vitamins and antioxidants, provides effective anti-aging benefits while being much less irritating.

How often should retinol be used?

Retinol can be used every day, ideally in the evening, but trial and error will tell you what works best for you.

Is it safe to use our AHA and retinol products when trying to become pregnant, when pregnant or nursing?

We believe that given the type and concentration of AHA and retinol in our products they are safe. However, we recommend that you consult with your physician to be sure they are safe based on your specific situation.

Should I start using AHA and/or retinol products right before a big life event?

We do not recommend dramatically changing your skin care routine right before a big event. Blemishes sometimes occur at the onset of using products containing AHA’s as deeply embedded impurities are allowed to surface during the initial exfoliation process. However, if you plan in advance by at least six to eight weeks, use of these products will help you look your absolute best at your big event.

Are there any side effects to using AHA or retinol products?

Typically, there are no major side effects from using these products. We recommend that you do a patch test if you have delicate or sensitive skin or are a first-time user. A little drying, peeling, stinging or redness in the beginning is normal as your skin gets accustomed to the effects of these products. A good hydrating moisturizer should help alleviate these symptoms. If you experience a more severe reaction, stop using the product, wash the area with cool water, apply cold compresses, follow with a good hydrating moisturizer. If your reaction continues, you may be having an allergic reaction. Consider consulting a doctor.

Are Alpha Skin products tested on animals?

No, our products are never tested on animals.

In what order should I apply products?

Cleanse with Face Wash. Next, apply products one at a time, allowing several minutes to pass between applications, allowing product to penetrate to an appropriate skin level to perform its benefit. Since they perform at different skin levels our products only benefit each other, no order is wrong. There are many opinions; thinnest to thickest application is a good rule. Sunblock should always be applied at the end.

When does my Alpha Skin expire?

Once a product has been opened you should use within 12 months. Prolong product life by storing in ambient temperatures, out of direct sunlight and keep product closed when not in use.
